ANTHURIUM & HELICONIA: Anthurium andreanum is the Hawaiian flower. It can also be called "Flamingo Flower" or "Boy Flower". This species is native to the wet forests on the western slopes of the Andes. They were introduced into the Hawaiian Islands in 1889 by Samuel Mills Damon (the minister of finance for the Republic of Hawaii.) Heliconia is named after Mount Helicon, the seat of the Muses, the nine goddesses of the arts and sciences in Greek mythology. Common names for the genus include lobster-claws, wild plantains or false bird-of-paradise. |
